Paid Media

ChatGPT Advertising. Be there when they ask.

People now ask an AI what to buy — in full sentences, with their budget, their constraints and their reasons attached. That conversation is the richest buying signal on the internet, and it is now something you can advertise into. We build, run and measure it alongside your Google and Microsoft campaigns.

The Coffee Marketing Digital team, Bournemouth

No keywords. A conversation.

Someone typing "best cordless drill" into a search box has told you three words. Someone asking ChatGPT for "a cordless drill under £150, mainly for flat-pack furniture, I have never used one before" has told you their budget, their use case and their confidence level — before you have paid for anything.

There are no keywords to bid on here. Instead we describe the conversations your products genuinely belong in, and the ad, the landing page and the copy all feed the match. It is a different craft to paid search, and it rewards businesses who can articulate exactly who their product is for.

That is the opportunity. It is also why this is not a channel to switch on and walk away from.

Who this suits — and who it does not

This is a new, fast-moving channel. We would rather tell you it is not for you than take a budget that was never going to work.

Considered purchases

Products people research before buying — cameras, tools, appliances, machines, anything with specifications to compare. These are exactly the questions people take to an AI.

An existing product feed

If your catalogue already feeds Google Shopping, the groundwork is done — product campaigns are built from the same data.

Probably not you if…

We will say so early rather than late.

  • You sell on impulse or price alone — nobody asks an AI which one to grab at the till.
  • Your tracking is not yet reliable. This channel adds a second measurement layer; it will not fix a broken first one.
  • Your sector is one OpenAI does not accept — gambling, alcohol, tobacco, cryptocurrency and legal services among them, with finance and healthcare reviewed case by case.
  • You need a guaranteed return this quarter. This is a measured test with a decision point, not a certainty.

We run it on our own business before we run it on yours.

We hold a live, verified ChatGPT advertiser account, with the tracking pixel and server-side measurement already running on our own sites and our own subscription checkout.

Our rule is written into how we work: no client spends on this channel until we have run it with our own money and measured the result. When we bring you numbers, they will be numbers we paid for.

How we run it

Four stages, with a genuine decision point at the end. You are never committed to a channel that has not earned its place.

1

Eligibility and honest scoping

We check your sector against OpenAI’s advertising policy, look at whether your products suit conversational discovery, and confirm your tracking is sound enough to measure a new channel. If any of those fail, we stop here and tell you why.

2

Your account, our build

You open the advertiser account in your own company name and complete verification — OpenAI requires this and it cannot be delegated. We then set up measurement properly: the tracking pixel, the server-side connection behind it, and our own campaign tagging so revenue can be attributed independently.

3

Proof of concept

A deliberately contained first campaign on a test budget, built around the conversations your best products belong in. The job here is not scale — it is a clean commercial baseline, measured against how those same products already perform on Google.

4

Review, then expand or stop

At six weeks we put the numbers in front of you and make a call together: proceed, iterate, or park it. If it proceeds, we expand into segmented campaigns by category and brand, weighted towards your high-value lines and the questions your customers actually ask.

What managing this channel involves

The same standard of management as your Google and Microsoft campaigns — reported in the same place, on the same terms.

Policy and eligibility

Sector checked against OpenAI’s advertising policy before anything is built, and creative checked against UK advertising rules — the CAP Code applies here in full.

Conversation targeting

We write and refine the descriptions of the conversations your products belong in, one theme per ad group, iterating on what actually delivers.

Measurement that survives scrutiny

Pixel and server-side tracking working together and de-duplicated, plus independent campaign tagging so revenue is attributed from your own data, not taken on trust.

Product feed work

Your existing catalogue prepared and delivered to OpenAI’s specification — which differs from Google’s in ways that quietly break feeds if nobody checks.

Weekly optimisation

Conversation themes, creative, bids, budgets and exclusions reviewed every week, with every change and its reasoning recorded.

Judged on the same basis as your other channels

We tag every ChatGPT visit ourselves and join it back to your revenue data, so the channel is assessed on the same commercial terms as your Google, Microsoft and Meta spend — rather than on the platform’s own click counts.

Where this sits in your marketing plan

We use the Digital Marketing Maturity Model to decide what a business should be doing next, and this channel has a specific place in it — not first, and not last.

Foundations come first

Reliable tracking, a clean product feed and a Google account that is already profitable. Without those, a new channel measures your plumbing rather than the opportunity.

Then a proof of concept

A contained test with proper data capture and a commercial baseline, to establish whether the spend earns its place. This is the standard discipline for adding any channel, and ChatGPT is no exception.

Then expansion

Once there is real data to work from, the channel is segmented by category and brand, weighted towards high-value products and the intent-led questions your customers ask.

The questions worth asking

Can I advertise on ChatGPT from the UK?

Yes. ChatGPT ads began appearing for UK users in June 2026, and UK-registered businesses can open an advertiser account and buy placements in pounds sterling. Eligibility follows where your business is registered, not where your customers are.

Who actually sees ChatGPT ads?

Only people on the free and Go tiers. Anyone paying for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Education sees no ads at all. That matters most for business-to-business advertisers, whose buyers are more likely to be on a paid tier, and we will tell you if it makes your audience too small to be worth testing.

Do I need my own advertiser account?

Yes, and this is not optional. OpenAI has no agency manager account and no pooled billing, and agencies cannot open accounts on a client’s behalf. Your business opens the account in its own registered name, completes verification, and pays OpenAI directly for the media. We are then invited in to build and run the campaigns — so you keep ownership of the account and the data inside it, permanently.

Do I need a product feed?

For product campaigns, yes — and if you already advertise on Google Shopping the hard part is done, because they are built from the same catalogue data you already send to Google Merchant Centre. It is not a straight copy across: the specification differs in ways that break feeds quietly. Businesses without a suitable catalogue can run standard campaigns instead.

How is it measured?

With a tracking pixel and a server-side connection working together, plus our own campaign tagging. That last part is the important one. The platform reports clicks, spend and conversions, but it does not report what a sale was worth — so we tag every visit ourselves and join it back to your revenue data. Without that step you would be flying on volume alone.

Does paying for ads change what ChatGPT says about my brand?

No. Ads are clearly labelled as sponsored and sit separately from the answer, and OpenAI states advertisers cannot pay to modify or influence the responses ChatGPT generates. Being recommended in the answer itself is a separate discipline — that is AI visibility work, and it pairs with this rather than being bought through it.

What does it cost?

Media budget is set by you and paid directly to OpenAI from your own account. Our management is quoted individually on scope and scale, as with any channel — and nothing chargeable ever starts without a conversation and your sign-off first. Where a cheaper route to the same outcome exists, we will point you at it.

Is it too early to bother?

That is a fair question and the honest answer is that it depends on your patience for a measured test. The channel is genuinely new, has no published benchmarks, and lacks some of the measurement tooling mature platforms have. What it has is intent quality that nothing else matches, and very few UK advertisers in it. We would rather help you test it properly now than explain in a year why everyone else got there first.

Be there when they ask.

Tell us what you sell and what you currently spend on Google. We will come back with an honest read on whether your products suit conversational discovery, whether your sector is eligible, and what a contained first test would look like.

If we think it is too early for you, we will say so — and tell you what to fix first.
